The Homeless World Cup is a great example of how sport and community can come together and create positive change. It is truly wonderful to see how an overwhelming percentage of participant’s lives are positively impacted through the participation of soccer, the world’s game.

The world’s game originated on the streets, and it has returned to the streets again with the newly created Vancouver Dream Catchers. We all have a role to play in moving forward with opportunities to include people in the power of sport, and Vancouver’s Dream Catchers are at the forefront with their street soccer program. The newest members of Street Soccer Canada are pleased to bring the passion and power of social inclusion through sport to Vancouver. The Vancouver Dream Catchers are chasing a new dream - already “kicking it” with a dozen regular players and a total of 30 registered players by the end of February.

Practices began in February and run twice a week (one indoor and one outdoors). Our players are enthusiastic and committed, with positive changes occurring almost immediately. It is very exciting to see smiles and passion on the faces of some of the most marginalized people in our city. We salute each one of our intrepid players.

Street Soccer Canada’s guiding principles

Street Soccer Canada is a nation-wide grassroots organization committed to using sport to empower and embrace the homeless. Every year, players are selected to represent Canada in international competition at the annual Homeless World Cup.
